Worlds Longest Scuba Dive Galway Ireland - Images by Ronan Gray
*** UPDATE **** May 12 2010: Received this news from Declan through the guys at Scubadive West (www.scubadivewest.com) this morning:
Dear all
You will recall that I wrote earlier this year thanking you for supporting the ‘World’s Longest SCUBA dive’ record attempt, which raised over €35,000 for two children’s cancer charities (CD’s Helping Hands http://www.cdshelpinghands.ie/ and St. Raphael’s Ward, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin).
At that time we had submitted our claim to Guinness noting that their acceptance of our attempt would be the icing on the cake.
Well, good news……
Guinness have just contacted me offering their congratulations in setting a new Guinness World Record in the category ‘Longest open saltwater SCUBA dive (cold water)’. Official time 11hrs 42mins.
Best wishes
Declan Devane
On October 10, Irish brothers Declan and Paul Devane set out to create a world record for the longest SCUBA dive in open water less than 15C (~60F). The event was designed to raise money and awareness for brain cancer, in memory of Cillian Devane, who died of a brain tumour on the 6th February 2009 at 2 years of age. See www.worldslongestscubadive.com for more details.
SAIS provided lighting and some consultation for the record attempt. See above & below for images and clips from the day.
